Former coach Wayne Dobbs dies at 75

Wayne Dobbs, who was Vanderbilt’s head men’s basketball coach for three years in the late 1970’s, died of an apparent heart attack Feb. 7. Funeral services are scheduled for Feb. 16 at the Carmichael Funeral Home in his hometown of Smyrna, Ga.

Mr. Dobbs had served as an assistant to Roy Skinner for six years prior to being named head coach upon Skinner’s retirement after the 1976 season. He led the Commodores through the 1978-79 when the team posted an 18-9 mark, ending with an overall record of 38-42. Mr. Dobbs had also coached both baseball and basketball at Belmont and was at George Washington prior to coming to Vanderbilt.
