NASHVILLE, Tenn. — “It was one of the best performances I’ve seen here,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Melanie Balcomb, now in her 10th season at Vanderbilt, said after Christina Foggie poured in a career-high 34 points to help Vanderbilt upset No. 17/15 Georgia, 68-48.

Foggie went 12-24 from the field and 7-16 from three-point range to reach the 34-point mark, the first time a Vanderbilt player has scored more than 30 points since Carla Thomasin November 2006.

Nearly overshadowed was the performance of junior forward Tiffany Clarke, who scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her 11th career double-double. Guards Kady Schrann and Jasmine Listerhad six and five assists, respectively.

Georgia was led by 15 points from forward Anne Marie Armstrong, who also grabbed five boards and dished our three assists. Guard Meredith Mitchell had 12 points and four assists.

Vanderbilt held Georgia to its lowest point total of the season. It is the first time the Commodores held an SEC opponent to under 50 points since January 30 of last season when they defeated Ole Miss, 71-42.

The first half was a battle, featuring five ties and nine lead changes. Vanderbilt finally played well to close out a first half, going on a 5-0 run over the final 2:33 to open up a 31-26 lead at the break. Foggie had 13 at the half and was just starting to heat up.

The Commodores used strong play in the paint, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs down low, 22-10, in the second half alone, to open things up for Foggie on the perimeter. In the second half alone, she went 8-13 from the field and 4-8 from three.

“This team got (Foggie) 16 threes,” Balcomb said. “She’s been first or second in the country in three-point shooting all season and had two shots versus South Carolina and they got her 16 threes tonight. This had been a discussion for us and our team did a great job (getting Foggie open looks).”

“It was a lot of fun,” Foggie said, summing up her night.

While Foggie’s scoring took the spotlight, Clarke was quick to point out defense played a huge role.

“Defense was going to win this game, so I wanted to do my part and help defense lead to offense,” Clarke said.

The Commodores will look to get back to even in SEC play on Sunday, January 29, when they cap a three-game homestand against LSU. Tipoff at Memorial Gym is set for 2:00 p.m. The game is Vanderbilt’s annual Pink Out, as part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Play 4Kay initiative to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
