March 13, 2012

Vanderbilt sophomore guard Christina Foggie, who became Vanderbilt’s first SEC scoring champion since 1991, has been named First Team All-Southeastern Conference by the Associated Press.

Foggie enters the NCAA Tournament averaging 17.8 points per contest, which leads the SEC and is 39th in the nation. She is one of the top three-point shooters in the country, averaging 42.1% from beyond the arc. That total ranks first in the league and third in the nation.

She put together 11 20-point performances on the year, including a stretch of five-straight games early in the year that was the first such run for a Vanderbilt player since 1991.

Foggie is joined on the first team by A’dia Mathies (Kentucky), Glory Johnson (Tennessee), Shekinna Stricklen (Tennessee) and LaSondra Barrett (LSU).

Mathies earned player of the year honors from the writers, while her coach, Matthew Mitchell, was named coach of the year and her teammate, Bria Goss, was name newcomer of the year.

The second team was composed of Georgia’s Anne Marie Armstrong and Jasmine Hassell, Florida’s Jennifer George, Arkansas’ C’eira Ricketts and Ole Miss’ Valencia McFarland.

Foggie and the Commodores earned a seven seed for the NCAA Tournament and will be hosting 10th-seeded Middle Tennessee in the first round at Memorial Gym on Saturday, March 18. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m. CT. For ticket information, click here.
