The Vanderbilt women’s golf team carded a first-round 308 in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, and are in a tie for 13th after play on Sunday. The second round continues on Monday from the par-72, 6,164-yard Rio Mar Country Club River Course.
Sophomore Courtney Zeng finished the day as the Commodores’ low finisher of the day after shooting a first-round 76. Junior Alexandra Farnsworth and freshman Alison Armstrong each ended the day with a 77, senior Kate Sborov a 78, and freshman Abbey Carlson an 81.
“I wasn’t sure what kind of scores we’d see today after the three-month offseason,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “The rust really showed around the greens, as we struggled getting the ball in the hole. But I was really glad to see the fight is still there. No one is happy with where we are right now, but we all feel confident that our hard work will get us to where we want to be. We’ve got a lot of golf to be played this spring and we’re anxious to keep grinding and trying to get one day better.”
Furman leads the team standings after shooting a two-over, 290, on Sunday. Texas Tech is in second with a 292.
Individually, the Purple Paladins’ Haylee Harford and Baylor’s Maria Vesga lead the tournament at two-under par, 70.
The second round continues Monday from Puerto Rico.
