Vanderbilt junior Lauren Stratton tallied a one-over par, 72, on Friday to lead all Commodore scorers in the opening round of the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The Commodores are in 12th place after the first day of play after firing a team total of 295 at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.
Stratton, who had surgery for a kidney stone late last week, made her way around the golf course with three birdies, 12 pars, two bogeys, and a double bogey. Rene Sobolewski shot a two-over 73, Kendall Martindale a three-over 74, Irina Gabasa a 76, and Marina Alex a 78.
“We had to count some high numbers today, so it will be a good little test to try to get inside of the top eight in a really good field by the end of the weekend,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I’m really proud of Rene, who put a big number on the board but immediately responded with a birdie and then finished the back nine at two-under par.”
Host Arizona State leads all teams, eight of which are in the Golfweek top 25, after shooting a four-under par, 280, four strokes better than second place UCLA and Stanford. Bethany Calvo of UNLV and Justine Lee of Arizona State are tied for the individual lead with a four-under 68. The duo leads four players by one stroke heading into the second round on Saturday.
The second round continues Saturday from Tempe, Ariz.
