Final Round Charge

9-under-par final round propels Vanderbilt to second place in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — Vanderbilt women’s golf tied for second place this week at the Puerto Rico Classic with a 17-under-par performance. The Commodores carded a 9-under-par final round on Monday to jump up the leaderboard by six spots.

“I’m very thankful we got to play this last round today, because after that second round yesterday, I felt like this team was capable of more,” said head coach Greg Allen. “The girls definitely proved that today.”

Angelina Tolentino, finishing eighth individually, holed six birdies on her way to a 5-under-par round. The sophomore has now finished in the top 10 three times this academic year, matching her freshman year total.

Ava Merrill notched a 4-under round to close out her week in 13th place. Tillie Claggett, tied for 15th, went 2-under on Monday to finish the tournament at 3-under par.

“AT got us off to a great start, and then Ava and Tillie started making putts,” said Allen. “Next thing you know, we were moving.”

Elizabeth Rudisill also tied for 15th individually at 3-under with a final-round 74. Sara Im shot a 73 on Monday, and Lynn Lim, competing as an individual, had a 79.

Vanderbilt tied with Ole Miss for a share of second place. Arkansas won the tournament at 23-under par. The Commodores have finished in the top three at every event this year.

“I’m really proud of the team effort we played with this week and excited to see what this can do as we keep moving forward.”

Vanderbilt will compete next at the Alice & John Wallace Classic in Palm Desert, California from February 14-16.
