Alexandra Farnsworth carded a first-round 68 at the 2017 SEC Championship and is in a tie for the individual lead after the first day of play at the Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham. As a team, Vanderbilt is in a tie for fifth with Georgia and Tennessee with a total of one-under par, 287.
The junior from Nashville posted a four-birdie, no-bogey round at Greystone Friday, and is tied with Katelyn Dambaugh of South Carolina and Alana Uriell of Arkansas atop the individual leader board. Vanderbilt also received a solid effort from sophomore Courtney Zeng, who fired a two-under par, 70, in her first round. Other counters for the Commodores included 74 from senior Kate Sborov and a 75 from freshman Abbey Carlson.
“I tell you what, through 13-14 holes that was really fun to watch,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “And, I’m proud of how a couple of them bounced back from some big numbers and kept grinding away. I thought the body language and the attitude was great from start to finish. Farney played like Farney today and I’m so happy for her. She’s been working hard and has put a ton of pressure on herself to post numbers like today. It’s really nice to see it come together for her. There’s still much golf to be played but the important thing is we continue to stay focused on the process of hitting committed, courageous and confident shots and putts.
Texas A&M is the team leader after shooting a six-under, 282 on Friday. The Aggies have a one stroke lead on second-place Arkansas heading into the second round.
The second round of the 54-hole event takes place on Saturday.
