Sophomore Alexandra Farnsworth carded a four-under par, 67, in her opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and is tied atop the individual leader board with Cheyenne Knight of Alabama and Lauren Coughlin of Virginia. As a team, the Commodores are third with a team total of two-under par, 282, in a field that features eight of the nation’s top 30 teams.
Farnsworth made four birdies and had no bogeys on her card Friday in her career-low round. Birdies for the sophomore from Nashville came on the fifth, sixth, 16th, and 18th holes on the par-71, 6,243-yard Long Cove Club.
Vanderbilt also counted a pair of even-par 71’s, from senior Jennifer Hahn and sophomore Cindy Ha, respectively, and a two-over, 73, from junior Antonia Scherer.
“I’m so happy for Farney and impressed with her round today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “She was very much in control of all parts of her game from start to finish. It’s nice to see us get off to a good start. Jenn and Cindy were solid today and it’s great to have Toni give us a good round. She’s been working really hard. And I’m proud of Kate hanging in there after a really tough start. More than anything, I just love the make up and attitude of this team no matter what the scoreboard says.”
Alabama leads the team leader board with a total of six-under par, 278, three shots better than second-place Virginia and four better than the Commodores.
The second round of the tournament is Saturday with Vanderbilt teeing off at 9:10 CT.
