Vanderbilt junior Alexandra Farnsworth carded a first-round five-under par, 67, at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev., on Sunday and is one shot off the individual lead heading into the second round Monday. As a team, the Commodores are in ninth place after shooting a team score of three-under, 285.
Farnsworth, from Nashville, carded five birdies and no bogeys in her first time around the 6,301-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club Sunday, and is tied for third with Idaho’s Clara Moyano, and trails individual leaders Hannah Facchini of UC Riverside and Maria Besga of Baylor by one shot.
“I’m really proud of how patient I stayed throughout the round today,” said Farnsworth, “It’s really easy to get ahead of yourself and start thinking about outcome when you get off to a good start early, so I’m proud of how I stayed in the present and played one shot at a time. This round was huge for my confidence, so I’m excited to take what I learned from today to the next two rounds!”
Farnsworth’s 67, sophomore Courtney Zeng’s 71, freshman Alison Armstrong’s 73, and freshman Abbey Carlson’s 74 were Vanderbilt’s counting scores on Sunday.
Baylor leads the tournament after shooting a 15-under, 273, five shots better than second-place Idaho.
The second round of the tournament continues on Monday in Boulder City.
