Erika Schneble, Josie Hahn Set Vanderbilt Records at Tyson Invitational 2/14/2004 Schneble Smashes 5,000, Hahn Sets High Jump Mark FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore Erika Schneble (Hendersonville, N.C.) and junior Josie Hahn (Clinton, Tenn.) established Vanderbilt team records Friday at the Tyson Invitational in the 5,000-meter run and indoor high jump, respectively. Schneble smashed the existing Commodore record for 5,000 meters, finishing second to former Tennessee All-American Sharon Dickie in 16:39.27. The effort is nearly 21 seconds faster than her previous best and eclipses the former school record set by Beth Tallent in 1991 by more than 18 seconds. Schneble’s remarkable performance, the best by a SEC runner this year, is also nine seconds faster than the Commodores’ outdoor record for the distance. Hahn, who set a school record in the outdoor high jump during an All-American campaign last year, upped the school’s indoor mark to 5’10.75″ in a third place overall finish. The jump allowed Hahn to claim sole possession of a fourth Commodore track and field mark. She also holds records in the outdoor high jump (5’11.25″), heptathlon (5,444 points) and pentathlon (3,892 points). The performances earned both Schneble and Hahn provisional qualifying marks for the upcoming NCAA Indoor National Championships, scheduled March 12-13 at the same University of Arkansas facility that hosted this meet. Schneble, an All-SEC cross country performer in 2003, has been outstanding during the early indoor season. In four competitions, she has set one school record and established career bests in the mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. Hahn’s effort broke the former indoor mark of 5’9.75″ she shared with Becky Collins, who cleared the height in 1999. The Commodores lone Tyson Invitational victory came in the distance medley relay as Ashleigh Wetzel (Lewisburg, Pa.), Vanessa Lagios (Indiatlantic, Fla.), Latisha Bryant (Atlanta, Ga.), and Alisa Cotter (Hanover, Mass.) combined for a 11:58.45 performance. The performance was nine seconds faster than the unit’s best previous effort this season. Several other Commodores enjoyed outstanding performances Friday at the Tyson Invitational. |
