LAS VEGAS — Vanderbilt assistant coach Josie Earnest was masterful over six games Sunday afternoon and as a result leads the Team USA Trials after the first day of competition.
Earnest crafted powerful games of 210-220-234-259-247-247 (1,417) to lead second place Haley Richard of Tipton, Michigan by seven pins and fellow professional Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Tex.
Vanderbilt All-American Robyn Renslow was 14th in this star-studded field of 109 with an average of 210.67 – more than 25 pins off Earnest’s torrid pace. Other Commodores competing in Vegas are Kasey Eaton (29th), Amanda Fry (30), Katie Stark (34), Nicole Powell (43) and Jordan Newham (72). The tournament grinds on through Thursday.
Each competitor is given a number equal to their daily finish and those figures are totaled throughout the week to determine final placings. In other words, Earnest got one “point” for today’s performance, Renslow 14 and so forth. The fewest point totals at week’s end will earn spots on Team USA and Junior Team USA.
