Duvenhage Contract Signing Completes VU Coaching Staff 8/1/2005 Vice Chancellor David Williams confirmed today that Ian Duvenhage has signed his contract as men’s tennis coach, officially completing Vanderbilt’s varsity head coaching roster. Earlier this summer baseball coach Tim Corbin and women’s basketball coach Melanie Balcomb signed new, long-term contract extensions. “While it was never a question of whether or not any of our coaches were going to sign their contracts, it is often a time-consuming process because of their busy schedules and the legal minutia of the contracts,” Williams said. “We believe we have the finest collection of head coaches in our history and it is gratifying to know they are enthusiastic about Vanderbilt and investing in our student-athletes.” Duvenhage was hired June 23 to replace Ken Flach at the helm of the successful men’s tennis program. He was one of the nation’s winningest coaches for over a decade at the University of Florida. Both Corbin and Balcomb have enjoyed outstanding success in their relatively brief Vanderbilt tenures. Corbin led the 2004 Commodores to an NCAA Super Regional berth after a record-setting season of 45 victories. He has taken the Black and Gold to two SEC Tournaments and home attendance has set all-time school records each of the last two seasons. Balcomb has averaged 24 victories during her three years as a Commodore. Her 2004 Vanderbilt team won the SEC Tournament and all three of her VU teams reached the NCAA Tournament, two advancing to the Sweet 16. As a private institution, Vanderbilt does not divulge the terms of its contracts. |
