Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball team returns to the hardwood on Wednesday when the Commodores travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to play Bowling Green at 6 p.m. CT at Anderson Arena. The game will be the first of two straight road games for the 23rd-ranked Commodores who will play at Denver on Sunday. Wednesday’s game will also be the start of a nine-game stretch where the Commodores play four games leading up to the start of final exams.
The Commodores are looking to snap a two-game losing skid to Bowling Green, who topped Vanderbilt in the 2007 NCAA Tournament (59-56) and at Memorial Gym last year (66-60). Vanderbilt is 4-1 this season after winning the 2010 Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament with a 74-68 victory over Princeton on Sunday. Bowling Green is 6-1 overall and has won six straight games after losing at Evansville to open the season.
Vanderbilt has never played at Bowling Green. Its only two wins in the series came at home during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. The Commodores are 0-1 on the road this season, falling at Florida State on Nov. 21.
Wednesday’s game will air on 560 AM in Nashville with play-by-play announcer Charlie Mattos on the call. Fans may also listen to the game online by subscribing to All-Access on VUCommodores.com.
Last Time Out
No. 24/22 Vanderbilt held off a feisty Princeton team to claim the 12th Annual Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament with a 74-68 win on Sunday at Memorial Gym.
Although the lead changed hands just one time in the game, the Commodores (4-1) were unable to create much separation from Princeton (3-2), which seemingly had an answer for every Vanderbilt run.
Vanderbilt was paced by Tournament MVP Hannah Tuomi, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. Jasmine Lister also added 15 points and Tiffany Clarke had nine. Lister and Clarke were part of the All-Tournament Team.
With the win, Vanderbilt improved to 24-0 all-time in its annual Thanksgiving Tournament. In total, the Commodores are 43-1 all-time in home tournament games.
Success in November
Vanderbilt closed the month of November with a 4-1 record and are now 45-5 under Head Coach Melanie Balcomb in the month with all five losses occurring on the road.
`Dores top Century Mark
With Vanderbilt’s 111-53 win over Quinnipiac, Vanderbilt topped the century mark for the first time since scoring 104 on Nov. 23, 2007 against Belmont. It was the most points scored by VU since scoring 116 Nov. 29, 1998 against Hampton. Quinnipiac Win Makes Record Book
Vanderbilt’s 58-point victory against Quinnipiac on Nov. 26 will go down as one of Vanderbilt’s most dominating performances of all time. Vanderbilt used a 46-8 run to open the second half en route the 58-point win, which tied for th 12th largest margin of victory in school history. Vanderbilt outscored Quinnipiac by 42 points in the second half, which was the second largest margin in school history.
Double-Double Take Two
Elan Brown and Tiffany Clarke posted double-doubles in Vanderbilt’s win against Quinnipiac. Brown posted a career-best 18 points to go with 10 rebounds to notch the first double-double of her career. Clarke’s double-double was the second of her career as she scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds.
Brown and Clarke’s double-doubles marked the first time two players had double-doubles in the first game since Nov. 14 2007 when Jennifer Risper and Christina Wirth had double-doubles at Indiana State.
About Bowling Green
Bowling Green is a senior-laden team led by senior Lauren Prochaska, who has been the MAC Player of the Year each of the last two seasons. Prochaska is averaging a team-best 18.7 points and 7.6 rebounds through seven games this season. Bowling Green returned three starters, including 10 letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 27-7 overall and won the MAC regular season and tournament titles.
This is the final season that Bowling Green will play at Anderson Arena. The Falcons have won 33 straight regular season home games with its last loss coming Jan. 30, 2008 against Western Michigan. BGSU has won 16 straight home games with the lone loss coming to Indiana in the 2009 WNIT. Anderson Arena has been Bowling Green’s home since 1960.
Under the direction of 10th-year Head Coach Curt Miller, Bowling Green is one of just three programs in the country that all four coaches are in at least their ninth season with the program.
Against the MAC
Vanderbilt is 13-2 all-time against teams that are currently in the MAC. The only two losses have come against Bowling Green, who Vanderbilt is 2-2 against all-time. Vanderbilt has lost the last two meetings with Bowling Green.
Last Meeting with Bowling Green
Last year Bowling Green defeated Vanderbilt 66-60 at Memorial Gym. The Commodores shot just 3-of-17 from three, while the Falcons hit 7-of-11 treys. Vanderbilt held a 59-58 lead with 3:21 to play, but could not hold on. Jence Rhoads scored a team-high 17 points, including 13 in the second half for Vanderbilt, which trailed by 16 at half time.
Tuomi MVP of Thanksgiving Tournament
Senior forward Hannah Tuomi was voted MVP of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament after leading the Commodores to wins over Quinnipiac and Princeton. Tuomi averaged 15.5 points during the tournament, which Vanderbilt claimed for the 12th time in its 12 years of existence.
Tuomi made 76.9 percent of her field-goal attempts and shot 73.3 percent from the free-throw line, while averaging 7.0 rebounds.
Tuomi posted season highs in points in consecutive games. The Thornton, Colo., native scored 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting to go along with five rebounds as Vanderbilt waxed Quinnipiac 111-53.
In the championship game against Princeton, Tuomi led the team and set a new season high with 16 points and nine rebounds in a 74-68 win. Tuomi connected on 5-of-7 field-goal attempts against the Tigers.
