NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tiffany Clarke recorded her first double-double of the season to lead Vanderbilt past Hartford, 67-45 on Thursday night at Memorial Gym.
Clarke scored 12 of her 22 points in the second half to help Vanderbilt (7-3) put away Hartford (6-2) for good. Clarke led all players with 22 points and 12 rebounds, which was her first double-double of the season and 13th of her career. Late in the first half, Clarke also became the 34th player to reach 1,000 career points for the Commodores. She is now tied for 31st (Rhonda Blades) all-time with 1,017 career points.
The Duluth, Ga., native shot an efficient 7-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. She also tied a career-high with four blocked shots.
Kady Schrann was the only other Commodore in double-figures as she finished with 10 points. Jasmine Lister added nine points and a game-high five assists. Elan Brown and Gabby Smith each scored eight points. Christina Foggie tied a career-high with four steals.
As a team, the Commodores shot 48 percent from the field, while holding the Hawks to just 32 percent from the field and only 23 percent from behind the three-point line. Vandy outrebounded Hartford, 43-32 for the game.
Vanderbilt led by as many as 24 points in the second half to run away from the Hawks.
Hartford’s Alex Hall scored 10 points to lead the Hawks, while Amber Bepko added eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
Vanderbilt used a 13-0 run midway through the first half to take a 17-8 lead. The Commodores held Hartford scoreless for nearly six minutes during the run and would extend their lead to as many as 13 in the first half. Behind 10 points and eight rebounds from Clarke, the Commodores led 30-19 at the half.
Clarke was the lone player in double-figures after one half of play. Brown had six points, while Lister chipped in five points and two assists.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first half, as Vanderbilt shot 40 percent (13-of-32) from the field, 16 percent (1-of-6) from behind the three-point line and only 37 percent (3-of-8) from the free throw line. Hartford shot 26 percent (6-of-23) from the field and 30 percent (3-of-10) from three-point range.
Vanderbilt outrebounded the Hawks 24-16, while also forcing eight Hartford first half turnovers.
Vanderbilt will take a 10-day layoff for final exams before its next game, a December 16 contest at No. 13/12 Oklahoma. That game is set for 2:00 p.m. CT in Norman, Okla.
