NASHVILLE — Vanderbilt women’s basketball Head Coach Melanie Balcomb has announced the signing of Marqu’es Webb to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Commodores. Webb becomes the third and final member of the 2012 signing class, joining Kylee Smith and Rebekah Dahlman.
Webb, a 6-1 post from Hoover, Ala., is a four star recruit according to ESPN’s HoopGurlz, which also ranks her as the No. 21 player in the nation and the No. 6 post in the country.
She plays at powerhouse Hoover High School, which has reached the state championship game each of the last four seasons. Webb moved to Hoover with her family as a junior where she promptly helped the Lady Bucs and Coach Donnie Quinn (now an assistant women’s basketball coach at Alabama) to the 2012 Class 6-A State Championship and a national ranking of eighth.
“Marqu’es brings a combination of physicality, mobility and skill that is very rare in post players,” Balcomb said. “She has an array of post moves, has great range on her shot and is relentless on the boards. She is constantly studying the game, and her basketball IQ is beyond her years. There is no doubt Marqu’es is one of the elite players in the country, but her best attribute may be what a great teammate she is and her ability to inspire everyone around her to be better.”
Webb led the team in both scoring and rebounding last year, earning First Team All-State honors, as well as a nomination for 6-A Player of the Year and Alabama Miss Basketball. She will play her senior season at Hoover under the direction of Coach Tiffany Frederick.
Before Webb’s family moved to Hoover, she attended Brewbaker Tech in Montgomery, Ala., She led Brewbaker to its first ever Class 4-A State Championship as a sophomore, averaging 16.3 points and 18.8 rebounds per game while earning Class 4-A Player of the Year honors. She was named MVP of the state championship game after scoring 24 points and 30 rebounds. She led the nation in rebounds during the 2010-11 season.
Webb has played on the elite summer travel circuit for the Georgia Metros. The Metros are the same nationally-respected program which produced current Vanderbilt seniors Elan Brown and Tiffany Clarke.
An outstanding student-athlete, Webb has earned numerous classroom honors during her high school academic career and was recently named one of Hoover’s Students of the Month.
