Dores Selected for Coretta Scott King Classic

Women's basketball battles Michigan on Jan. 19 in Newark, New Jersey, for a nationally-televised contest

NEWARK, N.J. – The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team will participate in the second edition of the Coretta Scott King Classic on Jan. 19, as the Commodores are set to take on Michigan at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The nationally televised event on FOX will highlight women’s college basketball while honoring the legacy and values of Coretta Scott King and the King family. The Commodores and the Wolverines will battle in a matchup between two teams that made last season’s NCAA Tournament. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT from the Prudential Center, home of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

The Coretta Scott King Classic is not just a basketball event—it is a movement that celebrates leadership, equality, education, and empowerment through sport. The day will include community activations, youth engagement programming, and more, reflecting the enduring legacy of Mrs. King.

“It is an honor to be invited to participate in the Coretta Scott King Classic against Michigan this season,” said Vanderbilt women’s basketball head coach Shea Ralph. The opportunity to honor Mrs. King’s legacy was one we could not pass up, since our student-athletes are living beneficiaries of her advocacy. We feel fortunate to align our program with the work of the entire King family, to celebrate Mrs. King’s conviction to create equality and empowerment for all of us, and to continue the fight for gender equity in sports.”

It will be the fifth all-time matchup between Vanderbilt and Michigan. The Commodores hold a 3-1 advantage, though the Wolverines claimed the win in the last matchup with a 50-42 victory in Ann Arbor. The Coretta Scott King Classic is the second neutral site contest between the two schools, as the first came at the Reebok Roundball Classic in Norfolk, Virginia, on Dec. 29, 1988, where Vandy posted a 95-86 victory.

The Coretta Scott King Classic is the third major women’s basketball event that features the Commodores during the 2025-26 season. Vanderbilt opens the campaign in Paris, France, on Nov. 3 to take on California as part of the 2025 Oui-Play Paris. The Dores will also spend the Thanksgiving holiday in the Caribbean to participate in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam on Nov. 27-29.
