Although Sunday was the first round of the spring season for the 11th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s golf team, there was no signs of rust on the Commodores in Orlando, Fla., at the UCF Challenge. Vanderbilt leads the team standings by four shots over second-place Iowa State after firing an 11-under par, 277, and senior Kendall Martindale also leads all individuals after shooting a first-round 66 at the Eagle Creek Golf Club.
Martindale has a one-shot lead on the Cyclones’ Chonlada Chayanun, while teammate Alexandra Farnsworth, in her first collegiate tournament representing the Commodores, is three strokes back of Martindale in a tie for fourth after carding a three-under, 69. Vanderbilt also counted a two-under par, 70, from junior Jennifer Hahn, who is in a tie for 10th, and an even-par, 72, from freshman Cindy Ha, who is in a tie for 23rd.
Other scores for Vanderbilt Sunday came from junior Morgan Ransom, who shot a seven-over, 79, and sophomore Kate Sborov, who shot a first-round 80 as an individual.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect today coming out of the offseason and not having played a competitive round since late October,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I asked the girls to focus on what they could control – attitude, effort body language and how they react to tough breaks. They all looked very comfortable and I’m proud of how they went out and competed.”
Martindale had seven birdies in her round Sunday, and as a team, the Commodores counted 16 birdies at the par-72, 6,349-yard layout.
The second round continues Monday at the Eagle Creek Golf Club with the first Commodore tee time coming at 9 a.m. CT.
