Scouting The Commodores
The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team (9-3) looks to wrap-up non-conference play by running its winning streak to seven when it travels to Southern California on Saturday, December 29. Tiffany Clarke and Christina Foggie lead the Commodore scoring efforts, posting 15.2 and 14.5 points per game, respectively. Clarke adds 7.8 rebounds per game (seventh in SEC) and is shooting 60.0% from the field (second in SEC). Foggie is one of the league’s top three-point shooters, shooting 38.8% (fourth). Also expected to start are guards Jasmine Lister and Elan Brown. Lister is posting 11.6 points per outing, while adding 5.5 assists per contest. Brown is one of the most versatile players on the team, averaging 6.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest, along with a team best 22 steals. Sophomore guard Kady Schrann has started nine of 12 contests this season, posting 7.4 points per game. Other major contributors include Gabby Smith (four starts, 3.4 ppg), Heather Bowe (5.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Kendall Shaw (3.7 ppg, 2.5 rpg). The trip to USC is the longest of the season for Vanderbilt.
Scouting The Trojans
USC enters the contest having lost five-straight games, most recently to #4 Duke in the Women of Troy Classic. The Trojans are led by a pair of double-digit scorers in Cassie Harberts and Ariya Crook. Harberst is posting 16.2 points per game, while adding a team-best 7.5 rebounds per outing. Crook contributes 13.3 points and a team-best 2.8 assists per contest. Either Harberst or Crook have led USC in scoring during each game this season. USC’s struggles have been on both ends of the floor. The Trojans rank 10th in the Pac-12 in scoring (61.2 ppg), while they are 11th in the league in scoring defense (67.9 ppg). Head Coach Michael Cooper’s squad will be looking for its first win since November 27, when they defeated UC Santa Barbara, 62-51. USC has faced an SEC team this year, dropping a 79-61 decision to Texas A&M in Los Angeles on December 15.
