KENNER, LA—Fourth rated Vanderbilt showed its depth and versatility Friday while going undefeated and leading the All-State Sugar Bowl Invitational.

The Commodores hold a narrow lead over defending national champion Sam Houston State heading into Saturday’s second day of competition. Stephen F. Austin is third.

The Commodores used a different lineup in every one of the five Baker games and all nine members of the travel party saw significant action. Vanderbilt employed three different anchor bowlers and used three different women as lead-off, all part of the early season strategy of Head Coach John Williamson.

“We had a real good day,” Coach John Williamson said. “We had made decisions before we began that whoever didn’t play in the first game would start the second. That worked well and we just continued along, even though pulling people in and out probably cost us some pins with the lack of playing continuity. We weren’t concerned about pin fall.

“I was really, really pleased with Olivia Wirtz,” Williamson continued. “Today she bowled 30 frames and her only two opens were on splits. Twenty-eight fills out of 30 frames represents a huge improvement over where she was last season.”

Saturday’s play will be five traditional team games beginning at 9:00 a.m. (CT). The results can be followed after each game on the @VandyBowling on Twitter.
