First Round Results/2nd Round Tee Times
Vanderbilt saw its first glimpse of the national championship golf course Friday at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview in Athens, Ga., and is in a tie for seventh after the first day of play with a total of nine-over par, 297. Senior Lauren Stratton and freshman Jenny Hahn paced the Commodore effort at the UGA Golf Course with a pair of one-over par, 73’s.
Auburn leads the tournament and was the only team under par with a one-under, 287. The Tigers lead second-place UCLA by seven strokes. Individually, the Bruins’ Erynne Lee leads the event with a four-under par, 68, one stroke better than Collins Bradshaw of Georgia and Tonje Daffinrud of Denver.
Stratton posted two bogeys and a birdie in her first round in Athens, while Hahn’s 73 was a result of two birdies, 13 pars, and three bogeys. Hahn is competing in her third career tournament.
Other scores for the Commodores were Kendall Martidale’s 74, Rene Sobolewski’s 77, and Irina Gabasa’s 82.
“The course was tough and really long with a lot of hills,” said head coach Greg Allen, when asked about the site of the 2013 NCAA Championship. “Bermuda fairways and rough, with bent grass greens, so you could really go after the pins.
“We really played well on the front nine, but nothing was really dropping, except for the two birdies that Kendall made. On the back, we just didn’t play well. We had poorly executed shots, a lot of putts, and gave a bunch back. I believe we’ll play the course better as we get to know it better. We’re only a few strokes out of second, so we’re right there. This team is great to be around and fun to coach, so I’m looking forward to Saturday.”
Vanderbilt will tee off at 8 a.m. Eastern time off of the number one tee after starting on the back nine on Friday. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com the rest of the weekend.
