The #13-ranked Vanderbilt women’s golf team had a stellar 36-hole first day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Honolulu, posting a two-round score of two-under par, 574 (288-286), which is good for a 19-shot lead on the 14-team field. Additionally, two Commodores, senior Kendall Martindale and freshman Cindy Ha, are one and two in the individual standings, with two others, junior Jennifer Hahn and sophomore Kate Sborov, in a tie for seventh.
“Anytime you have a 36-hole day, you know it’s gonna be a mentally challenging day,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Throw in a steady rain for much of the day, and it’s a grind. I’m so proud of the mental toughness the girls showed. They really competed all day long and showed great effort, a positive attitude and patience.”
Martindale, the individual leader, is currently at five-under par, 139 (68-71) for the event, three strokes better than Ha, who posted a total of 142 (73-69). Hahn and Sborov are each at three-over, 147, while Morgan Ransom finished her day with a seven-over, 151 (74-77).
As a team, the Commodores’ 574 is 19 shots better than second-place Boise State.
The third and final round of the tournament concludes with 18 holes Thursday at the Leilehua Golf Course, which is set up as a par-72, 6,228-yard format.
