Senior Kate Sborov and junior Alexandra Farnsworth each carded a one-over 72 on Friday at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C., at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate to lead the Commodores on day one of the tournament. Vanderbilt is in eighth place on the team leader board with a team score of 294.
“I was really impressed with our poise today and thought the girls were really patient throughout the entire round,” said Vanderbilt Greg Allen. “Long Cove Club is one of the best courses we play and it’s such a great test of golf and requires you to be in control of your game. This is also probably the toughest field we will face until SEC’s, so the girls know we have a challenge before us. I’m excited to see how they handle the next two days.”
Vanderbilt counted Sborov and Farnsworth’s 72’s, a 73 from sophomore Courtney Zeng, and a 77 from freshman Abbey Carlson.
Alabama leads the team leader board with a two-under par, 282, four shots better than second-place Duke. Individually four players, Alabama’s Kristen Gillman and Cheyenne Knight, Arizona State’s Sophia Zeeb, and Duke’s Gurbani Singh, lead all individuals.
The second round of the tournament continues Saturday from Long Cove Club.
