Commodore sophomore Kendall Martindale finished her first round at the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleeza Rice birdie-birdie-birdie in route to a one-under par, 70, to lead Vanderbilt into the third place on the team leaderboard. Martindale is in a tie for fourth place individually.
The Commodores led the tournament for more than half of their first round, faltered slightly on number six at the Stanford Golf Course, but used Martindale’s finish to catapult themselves back into contention. Vanderbilt trails second-place Oregon State by a stroke and first-place USC by two strokes.
“With the exception of the sixth hole, we played a solid round of golf today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We got off to a great start this morning and led for most of the round and hung in their after six. They all look really good and I told them before leaving Nashville that it’s our time. We have a lot of golf left to play but I’m excited about the way we’re playing and where they are mentally.”
Senior Lauren Stratton is a stroke behind Martindale after an even-par, 71, and is in a tie for 10th. Junior Rene Sobolewski is in a tie for 17th after a one-over, 72, freshman Jenny Hahn fired a 75 (T-39) and Irina Gabasa carded a 77 (T-60).
Individually, there is a three-way tie for first at two-under par, with Doris Chen of Southern California, Cassy Isagawa of Oregon, and Josephine Janson of Oklahoma State tied for the lead.
The second round of the tournament continues on Saturday.
