The 11th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores women’s golf team fired an even-par, 288, in their first round at the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship and are in second place on the team leader board, three strokes behind leader LSU. Senior Irina Gabasa and freshman Cindya Ha led Vanderbilt on Friday with each posting a two-under par, 70, in their first round on the South Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Gabasa and Ha, both in fourth place in the individual standings, trail individual leader Elise Bradley of LSU by four strokes heading into the second round on Saturday.
Commodore Scores
Gabasa posted four birdies and two bogeys in her round on Friday, with all four birdies coming on the back nine of the South Course. Junior Jennifer Hahn and sophomore Antonia Scherer each carded an even-par, 72 and are in a tie for 12th individually. Junior Morgan Ransom shot a two-over, 74, while senior Kendall Martindale fired a four-over par, 76.
Vanderbilt also participated with a “B” team, with freshman Cindy Ha leading that squad with a two-under par, 70, which is tied with Gabasa for a tie for fourth. Freshman Alexandra Farnsworth fired a 77, sophomore Kate Sborov a 78, sophomore Lauren Johnson an 81, and graduate student Katie Rose Higgins an 87.
Vanderbilt will tee off with leader LSU and third-place Chattanooga on Saturday.
Key Stretch for Vanderbilt
Came on the back nine, when the team combined to make 13 birdies. On the final three holes, Commodore players made six birdies, with Gabasa birdieing her 17th and 18th holes.

“I’m really proud of the finish we had and the way we hung in there after a rough start. I continue to be impressed by the attitude and effort that this team gives on a daily basis.
“I told them in the locker room after we finished that it’s very encouraging as a coach to see how this team pushes one another and to embrace the team competition throughout the year. As for the next two days, we need to continue to focus in the things we can control.”
Notes from the Round
- Individual leader Elise Bradley carded five birdies and one bogey in her round on Friday.
- Ha, in her collegiate debut, made her mark on her back nine (the South’s front), when she had four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on three and four and seven and eight.
- Mississippi State’s Jessica Peng carded the most birdies on Friday, making seven, including four of her final five holes.
