The 16th-ranked Commodores finished the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., in 12th place after firing a team total of 301 at the Long Cove Club. Freshman Cindy Ha led Vanderbilt with an even-par, 72, which is good for a tie for 10th on the individual leader board.
“Heck of a round today by Southern Cal,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Temps were in the 40s with a stiff north wind putting wind chills in the 30s. Tough conditions on one of the best courses we get to play. It demands your full attention on every shot and for the most part, I’m pleased with how we handled the day. The girls really played hard and competed with a lot of heart. With a great field from top to bottom, a shot here or there can make a difference from top 5 or outside the top 10. We have traditionally played well at Long Cove so I feel good about the girls making a move in the right direction over the weekend.”
Vanderbilt also counted a pair of 75’s from senior Kendall Martindale and freshman Alexandra Farnsworth and a 79 from sophomore Antonia Scherer and senior Irina Gabasa.
Southern Cal leads the team portion of the tournament with a 285, six strokes better than second-place LSU. The Trojans’ Gabriella Then is the individual leader after round one after posting a three-under, 69, on Friday.
The second round continues Saturday in Hilton Head.
