The rv/24 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team (20-6, 8-5 SEC) travels to Lexington, Ky., to face No. 7/8 Kentucky (21-5, 10-3 SEC), on Monday, February 20. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 as part of the network’s Big Monday. The contest can also be heard in Nashville on WNSR 560 AM.
Scouting The Commodores
The Commodores travel to Lexington, Ky., for a showdown with No. 7/8 Kentucky having won six of their last seven contests, including a 75-69 overtime win over Florida in their last outing. Christina Foggie leads both Vanderbilt and the Southeastern Conference in scoring at 18.0 points per game. She scored 15 against the Gators, including the game-tying three-pointer as time expired in regulation. Behind her is a trio of Commodores averaging at least 11.5 points per game. Jasmine Lister is posting 12.1 points per contest, as well as an SEC-best 5.7 assists per game. Tiffany Clarke is averaging 11.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, while Stephanie Holzer is recording 11.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Clarke (18 points, 17 rebounds) and Holzer (14 points, 12 rebounds) both had double-doubles in the win over Florida, which gave Vanderbilt 20 wins for the 13th straight season.
Scouting The Wildcats
Kentucky enters the game having lost three straight games, all on the road, to LSU, Tennessee and Alabama. That was after than had won 10-straight to open SEC play. A’dia Mathies leads the Wildcats with 15.4 points per game, while Bria Goss is also in double-figures at 11.6 points per contest. Samarie Walker leads the team in rebounding at 6.1 per outing, while Amber Smith has the most assists on the season at 2.9 per game. The Wildcats lead the SEC in scoring at 76.2 points per game, as well as scoring margin, with an average margin of victory of 17.5 points. Matthew Mitchell’s team is 16-0 at home this season and he regularly uses 10 different players in his rotation. By comparison, Vanderbilt currently only dresses 10 players.
Vanderbilt vs. Kentucky – The Series
Monday night is the 43rd match-up between Kentucky and Vanderbilt, with the Commodores holding a 27-16 edge in the series. Kentucky won 11 of the first 15 contests from 1981-91 before Vanderbilt rattled off 22 of the next 23 wins in the series, including the first nine contests during Melanie Balcomb’s tenure. Since 2009, Kentucky has won four of the last five including all three meetings last season. During the season, the Wildcats won 78-68 in Lexington, 80-71 at Memorial Gym and 69-56 in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament at Bridgestone Arena. Vanderbilt leads the all-time series in Lexington, 10-9.
On Deck
The Commodores play their final road contest of the season on Thursday, February 23, when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to try and sweep the season series with LSU. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT and the game can be seen on FSN. The next game outside Music City for Vanderbilt would be the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, as it concludes the regular season on Sunday, February 26, at home versus Alabama, the SEC Tournament will be played in downtown Nashville at Bridgestone Arena and the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament will be at Memorial Gym.
