'Dores go 6-0 and maintain fifth

Jan. 24, 2015

READING, PA—Vanderbilt won all six of its games and cracked the 1,000 pin mark in five of those matches but in a tightly bunched field of quality teams, maintained its fifth place standing after two days of the Kutztown Invitational. As a result, the best the Commodores can hope to finish is third when the championship bracket begins Sunday morning. The Commodores start off against Arkansas State, the sixth seed.

“For the most part we were more consistent,” Coach John Williamson said. “We executed better on our first shots and did a very nice job spare shooting. We had five good scores; the last game we didn’t execute well but we had ground really hard all day trying to make up pins.”

Several Commodores had excellent days, headed by Robyn Renslow and Rebeca Reguero. Renslow showed why she is a two-time All-American with games of 215-220-190-197-213-178 (218.83) while Reguero continues to have a solid senior campaign with five games north of 200.

Renslow’s 290 – an opening spare followed by 11 strikes – equaled the third highest score in school history behind Brittni Hamilton’s 300, Kaitlin Reynolds’ 299 and matching Amanda Fry’s 290.

Renslow placed fourth individually behind UMES pace-setter Maria Alvarado, who averaged a nifty 226.3. Reguero was 25th, Katie Stark 28th and Fry 29th in the massive field.

Williamson was particularly pleased with his team’s huge comeback in the fourth game against a good Sacred Heart team that led by 80 pins with just three frames remaining. Fry had begun the game with the front five but in the final frames, the last section of the Vandy lineup was big. Reguero had a double in the ninth and tenth, Poss closed with five in a row and Renslow recorded strikes in the eighth, ninth and tenth. That was 10 strikes and enough to not only wipe out the big deficit but win by 28.

Sunday’s first game begins at 8:25 a.m. (ET), best four-of-seven Bakers. It can be watched on the Vanderbilt bowling USTREAM channel and results will be posted on Twitter. Bowl.com also has its cameras and Lucas Wiseman on hand to stream action including the championship game.
