ATLANTIC CITY, NJ—Vanderbilt bounced back strong in sweeping its three ranked opponents and placed third at the Monmouth Invitational Sunday.

The Commodores, rated fifth nationally, blitzed No. 24 Youngstown State and 12th ranked Monmouth, 4-0, in the best of seven Baker games and then downed eighth-rated Delaware State, 4-2 to claim third place in the 16 team field.

Vandy opened with a rotation of Adel Wahner, Kristin Quah, Emily Rigney, Giselle Poss and Maria Bulanova. In the win over Monmouth, Katie Stark was inserted for Quah. The `Dores averaged 210 over both matches and finished in plus pin count for the day (over a 200 average). In the finale against Delaware State, Vanderbilt went with Jordan Newham, Stark, Rigney, Poss and Bulanova.

The Commodores struggled in the tournament’s first two days but things seemed to get back on track today.

“We just bowled better,” said Coach John Williamson. “There was nothing magical about it. When you make your shots it’s not a hard game. We made it a lot harder than it needed to be the first two days.”

Rigney, the southpaw freshman from Melbourne, Australia, made her first all-tournament team based upon her sixth place finish in Saturday’s individual game play.

Fairleigh Dickinson defeated Sam Houston State in the championship match.

Vanderbilt’s next tournament will be its own Columbia 300 Music City Classic March 17-19 at the Smyrna Bowling Center. Admission to that event is free.
