The Commodore women’s golf team fired the second-lowest team total of the day on Sunday and finished in third place at a waterlogged SEC Championship in Birmingham, Ala., at the Greystone Golf and Country Club with a final total of 867 (293-292-282). Vanderbilt senior Kendall Martindale paved the way for the Commodores in the tournament, finishing in a tie for seventh with a final score of 214 (72-75-67).
Vanderbilt and the 13 other schools trudged their way around Greystone’s Legacy Course in extremely wet conditions for the entire three-day event. Tee times were delayed until at least 10 a.m. CT for every day of the tournament, and on Sunday, there was a 55 minute delay late in the afternoon due to lightning and heavy rains.
The Commodores finished in the top three at the SEC Championship for the fourth time in the program’s history, with Vanderbilt winning the team championship in 2004 and 2014. VU finished as runner-up in 2010 and sported the individual champion that season in Marina Alex.
Vanderbilt finished four shots back of second-place South Carolina and 16 strokes behind team champion Texas A&M this year.
“What an impressive team effort today. I’m so proud of the way they played,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “They came out ready and competed until the very end and looked sharp all day. That was the kind of round we needed. We just needed some help from A&M and South Carolina but they played well. This is some really good momentum to take into post season.”
Martindale’s final-round 67 tied for the second-lowest round of the tournament with two Texas A&M players and teammate Jennifer Hahn, who also carded a top 10 finish. Freshman Alexandra Farnsworth posted a career-low 69 on Sunday, while junior Morgan Ransom carded an even-par 72. Vanderbilt also counted a 74 from freshman Cindy Ha in the final round.
The Aggies’ Bianca Fabrizio won medalist honors with a final total of 207 (70-67-70), two shots better than teammate Maddie Szeryk.
The Commodores will now await their NCAA Regional destination May 7-9 in one of four places – Raleigh, N.C., South Bend, Ind., San Antonio, Texas, or St. George, Utah.
