After falling to fourth place on Saturday, the Commodore women’s golf team regrouped with a vengeance on Sunday at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel, Hill, N.C., firing a Sunday-low 284 to finish second on the team leader board, while sophomore Jenny Hahn carded a third-round 67 to vault into second place among all individuals to finish runner up. Vanderbilt finished with a three-round total of four-over par, 868 (285-299-284).
Vanderbilt had quite the day Sunday, counting Hahn’s 67, a 70 from freshman Simin Feng, a 71 from freshman Antonia Scherer, and a 76 from junior Kendall Martindale. The team total of 284 was second to champion Duke’s second-round 282 for the low single-round team score of the tournament.
The second-place finish was a career-best for Hahn, who combined to shoot six-under par in her last two rounds at the UNC Finley Course and had six birdies in her round on Sunday.
“Today my mindset was that yesterday was a thing of the past, and that today is a brand new day,” said Hahn. “I worked on some things yesterday on the range and got some things figured out, so I was feeling confident heading into my round today. I struck the ball really, really well, and I had a lot of kick-in birdies and I was very confident.”
Hahn finished with a total of 211 (73-71-67), which was four strokes back of individual champion Ashlan Ramsey of Clemson, who led wire-to-wire at the tournament. Scherer carded a total of 217 (67-79-71), which put her in a tie for 14th, while Feng finished in the top 20 with a 19th place finish with a total of 218 (75-73-70).
Duke won the tournament with a seven-under par, 857, 11 strokes better than the Commodores. Vanderbilt beat out third-place Oklahoma by three strokes and fourth-place Arkansas by six.
“We’ve been coming along really nicely,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “This is the team that we thought we had coming into the season. We played the first tournament this year without Simin, but we feel with her back in there we are really strong. We had three scores under par today, which is a strong finish in a really good field. I’m really proud of the girls on the way they responded on the struggle yesterday. They came back and got under par early, and kept it all day long. Jenny had a great finish, and I’m really proud of her finishing second this week. She closed with two birdies to tie her career low as a Commodore, and the second-place finish in this field should give her a lot of confidence.”
Vanderbilt closes out their fall season October 25-27 at the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif.
