NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Shawndarius Cowart hit four free throws in the final 100 seconds around a Malik Lamin dunk to lead Grambling to a 64-62 men’s basketball win over Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium on Friday.
Carte’are Gordon led the Tigers (6-3) with 12 points and Cowart added 11 as well as five assists, with Grambling forcing 19 turnovers that resulted in 23 points at the other end of the floor while also outscoring the Commodores (5-5) 34-14 in the paint.
The Tigers scored the first 10 points of the night and extended their lead to 14-2, but the Dores cut the deficit to three, 27-24, at the break. Vanderbilt went ahead on three different occasions in the first four minutes of the second half, and a 12-2 Vandy run left the Commodores ahead 58-55 with less than three minutes to go.
Tyrin Lawrence paced Vanderbilt with 15 points, going 8 of 9 at the foul line, and he was also credited with five rebounds. Colin Smith supplied a career-high 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench, with Trey Thomas and Liam Robbins scoring 12 apiece.
Vanderbilt will be off until meeting NC State on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 9:30 p.m. at the United Center in Chicago in the last of four games at the Legends of Basketball Showcase.
