NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s basketball team opening the 2022-23 season on Monday night with a 76-67 defeat to Memphis at Memorial Gymnasium.
Tyrin Lawrence scored a team-high 14 points while Myles Stute added 12 in front of an announced crowd of 10,380.

Memphis (1-0) held a 34-22 halftime lead. Memphis led by as many as 19 points in the second half before Vandy (0-1) chipped away. A 9-0 run capped by a Trey Thomas 3-pointer cut the Commodores’ deficit to eight with seven minutes to play. Memphis regained a double-digit edge, and Vanderbilt’s late rally came up short.
Memphis was led by 16 points from Kendric Davis, and Alex Lomax added 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Commodores next host Southern Mississippi at 6 p.m. Friday.
