PALO ALTO, Calif. — Jacqui Concolino shot a third-round 68 and paced the Vanderbilt Commodores to a sixth-place finish at the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. As a team, Vanderbilt shot a score of 865 (289-285-291), and Concolino led all Commodore golfers with a tie for 24th finish and a total of 217 (72-77-68).
UCLA claimed the team title with a final score of 844 (277-285-282), three strokes better than USC, who ended the weekend at 847 (279-286-282). Lizette Salas of USC won the individual portion of the tournament with a score of 206 (66-72-68).
Freshman Marina Alex (71-73-75) and sophomore Megan Grehan (72-73-74) finished behind Concolino with a 219, which tied both golfers for 32nd. Junior Brooke Goodwin finished in a tie for 38th with a score of 220 (78-68-74), and freshman Andrea Messer fired a 221 (74-71-76), which tied her for 48th.
“We played well this weekend, but we didn’t score for the whole tournament, although the 865 was the lowest stroke total we’ve had all year,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We didn’t make a lot of birdies, but we made a lot of pars.
“Jacqui played well today, and we got good rounds from everyone this weekend. But, we need to work on our consistency. Women’s golf is so competitive right now, that in order for us to be where we want to be, we’ll need to put three good rounds together.
“I think that is going to happen. We’ve seen good scoring out of all of our players sporadically this year. We’re hitting the ball well and having a good time doing it. It’s just a matter of time before it all comes together for us.”
The Commodores wrap up their fall season Nov. 2-4 at the Collegiate Match Play Championship in Celebration, Fla.
