HOUSTON, TX—Vanderbilt placed three individuals among the top five and ended the second day of the Track Kat Klash in third place Saturday. As a result, the Commodores will be in the championship bracket Sunday morning and face Arkansas State.

On the day of team games, Vandy won three of five games, defeating Delaware State, Central Missouri and Grambling while dropping the opening two games of the day to Sam Houston and Nebraska in a low scoring affair, 964-938. They quickly rebounded with a day-high 1,124 against Delaware State.

Sophomore Kristin Quah, a second-team All-American and national Rookie of the Year in 2015-16, won her first collegiate tournament while senior Giselle Poss was fourth and freshman Maria Bulanova, making her college debut, came in fifth.

Quah averaged 223 over the five games with a sizzling 276 against Central Missouri the highlight. Poss averaged 216.60 and Bulanova 215.80. Quah’s 276 contained a split and open in the first frame followed by 10 strikes.

“We had a lot of fun bowling today,” Quah said with a voice weak from cheering. “We were encouraging each other all day. Everyone pitched in and even when we lost those first matches we were making some good shots.”

Coach John Williamson was pleased with the way his team rebounded from the opening setbacks.

“We had to pick it up and be mentally tough the last three games as I didn’t think we were the first two,” he said. “We had opportunities to win in every game but didn’t execute.”

Williamson noted it’s been a long time since Vandy put three bowlers on the all-tournament team.

“I thought our three were exceptional,” the veteran coach noted. “Kris’ performance is obvious; I thought G (Giselle) was steady all day, making moves and trusting them. Maria did a good job, especially considering it is her first college event.”

Nebraska earned the No. 1 seed with host Sam Houston second and Arkansas State fourth to round out the teams in the championship bracket and thereby alive to win the tournament.
