NEW CASTLE, Del. — Vanderbilt will head into the final day of the Northeast Classic as the No. 2 seed after an impressive Saturday in Delaware.
“Today was a good day. We established some shot making for some momentum early and were able to keep it,” head coach John Williamson said. “We never got our thoughts too far ahead of us and we were able to execute and have some fun. We worked hard and sometimes tournaments can feel like work, but it felt like fun today. Victoria was good at the lead last spot throwing consistent shots and getting us an ability to make adjustments off of what her ball was doing, and then the rest of the group followed. We look forward to getting some rest and will be back at it bright and early tomorrow with a great opportunity to win a tournament.”
The Commodores, ranked third in the NTCA December poll, knocked down more than 1,100 pins in each of the first three games on the day, finishing with 5,625 over the five matches to close the gap with top-seeded Jacksonville State.
In the second game Saturday, Vanderbilt posted its third-best score in a traditional game since at least 2013, totaling 1,222 pins against No. 9 Mount St. Mary’s.
All five of Vandy’s starters finished inside the top 10 individually. Katelyn Abigania led the way on Day 2 with 1,185 pins and a second-place finish. Dannielle Henderson totaled 1,154 pins to finish fourth. Coming in seventh, Saphyre Nofuente scored 1,110 pins. To round out the top 10, Victoria Varano and Alyssa Ballard finished with 1,088 each earning the ninth and 10th-ranked spots.
Abigania’s tournament average of 237 ranks seventh in program history.
The Commodores will close out the Northeast Classic on Sunday with a best-of-seven Baker bracket beginning at 7:25 a.m. CT.
