LOUIS – The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team used a 20 point fourth quarter and fended off several late chances from Saint Louis to pick up a 74-69 road win to close out a four-game road swing on Wednesday night. Christa Reed led the way with 15 points and was joined in double figures by Chelsie Hall and Kayla Overbeck with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Autumn Newby posted a career-best and game-high 13 rebounds.

How It Happened
First Quarter: Vanderbilt 18, Saint Louis 18
The Commodores scored the first bucket of the game on a triple from Bell but the home team used an 8-0 run to take an 8-3 lead but the Vanderbilt fought back with a run of their own to take a 9-8 lead at the 6:00 mark. The rest of the quarter was a chess match as the teams matched each other bucket before a steal from Chelsie Hall and a foul on the other end resulted in a pair from the stripe followed by a trey form Kaleigh Clemons-Green and the Vanderbilt lead went up to six points at 18-12. The visitors erased it all and the game was tied at 18-18 after one period of play.
Second Quarter: Saint Louis 34, Vanderbilt 32
Saint Louis used an 11-0 run, started at the end of the first quarter, before a trey from Cierra Walker stopped the run. The Dores answered back with a spurt of their own – highlighted by buckets from Kaleigh Clemons-Green and Erin Whalen to tie the game at 24 but the Bilikens held a 27-23 lead at the 5:26 mark. With the game tied at 30 out of the media timeout, both teams had really good looks late but it was Saint Louis who took the 34-32 lead at the break.
Third Quarter: Vanderbilt 54, Saint Louis 52
Kaleigh Clemons-Green opened the quarter with a trey but the game, much like the last two games the Commodores have played, was a back and forth affair for the majority of the third quarter with neither team taking more than a one possession lead. The Bilikens led 43-40 at the media timeout but the Dores used an 8-0 spurt with a huge offensive rebound from LeaLea Carter which resulted in another trey from Cierra Walker as the Commodores took their largest lead 48-43, forcing a Saint Louis timeout. Kayla Overbeck turned the light bulb on and scored each of her 10 points after the break as the Commodores took a 54-52 into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter: Vanderbilt 74, Saint Louis 69
With the game tied at 56 with 8:55 left, the score see-sawed but Chelsie Hall wanted the ball in her hands and had a big drive to the bucket to cut the once two-possession lead to one but the trey from Gits made a huge triple as the shot clock wound down to keep the lead. Gits, who had 15 second-half points, kept the Bilikens in the hunt. With the Bilikens up by four, 66-62 with 3:22 left, the Commodores closed the game on a 12-3 run sparked by several huge offensive rebounds from Newby that led to three-pointers from Christa Reed en route to their second road win of the season.
Inside the Lane
-Today was the fourth meeting between Saint Louis and Vanderbilt. The Commodores have won each of the previous meetings This will be the first meeting between the teams since the 2014-15 season.
-The Bilikens are the second team from the A-10 the Commodores have placed in the last four games. Vanderbilt picked up its first win of the season against fellow A-10 member, George Washington on Thanksgiving.
-Kayla Overbeck was in double figures for the third straight game with 10 points
-LeaLea Carter scored her first points of the season in tonight’s contest.
-Autumn Newby tallied her second career game in double figures with a career-best 13 rebounds.
