Dores Down EA Sports

11/16/2005

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 17/20 Vanderbilt women’s basketball game made good use of its final exhibition game, defeating EA Sports, 102-65, Wednesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

Junior point guard Dee Davis assisted on 22 of Vanderbilt’s 35 field goals in an effort that would have broken the Commodores’ previous individual game record by five. Cherish Stringfield paced five Commodores in double-figures with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.

Juniors Carla Thomas and Caroline Williams each scored 14 points for the Dores, while freshmen Christina Wirth (13) and Holly Rogers (12) were also in double-figures. Jacksonville State product Shanika Freeman led EA Sports with 17 points.

Vanderbilt shot 57 percent for the game, including 63 percent from long range, to hand the visitors the second-worst loss of their 11-game exhibition road trip.

The Commodores hit the 100-point mark with 1:10 remaining in the game on a lay-up by sophomore Rachel Brockman.

Head Coach Melanie Balcomb’s Commodores (1-1) travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Nov. 19, to take on the Islanders at 1 p.m. CT. Vanderbilt played two regular-season contests over the weekend in Tempe, Ariz., and a scheduling quirk sandwiched the games between a pair of exhibitions.
