Dores Cruise to VU Thanksgiving Tournament Championship, 76-47 11-27-04

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Seniors Abi Ramsey and Ashley Earley combined for 41 points to lead No. 14 Vanderbilt over Siena 76-47 in the championship game of the Vanderbilt Tournament on Saturday. Ramsey was named the tournament’s most valuable player after scoring 20 points Saturday and finishing the invite averaging 19.0 points per game.

Earley scored a game-high 21 points after converting 9-of-11 from the field. The Commodores (4-0) had four of its five starters finish with double figures as Dee Davis added 14 points and Carla Thomas had 13 points. VU shot 54.5 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from three-point range led by Ramsey who connected on 6-of-9 three-pointers. The six three-pointers matched her career high for three-pointers made in a game.

Vanderbilt (4-0) forced 12 turnovers in a 15-0 first-half run. A Ramsey 3-pointer extended the Commodores’ lead to 38-11 just before halftime. VU forced 30 turnovers for the fourth straight game and maintained its steals per game average coming away with 16 steals.

Siena shot 54.2 percent in the second half including 75 percent from three-point range as VU only outscored the Saints, 38-36. Melissa Manzer led Siena with 11 points off the bench.

With the win, Vanderbilt extended its string of home-court nonconference victories to 46. Davis and Earley also were named to the All-tournament team along with Rhode Island ‘s Peta Kneen, Siena’s Laura Menty and UT-Martin’s Andreika Jackson.

Vanderbilt returns to action Wednesday when the Commodores host Memphis in the first game of a doubleheader with Vanderbilt men’s team. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Rhode Island 79, UT-Martin 66

Safi Mojidi and Peta Kneeneach scored 18 points to lead Rhode Island past UT-Martin 79-66 Saturday in the consolation game of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Rams (2-2) rebounded from their loss to Vanderbilt. All five starters for the Rams scored in double figures. Justine Boisvert had 16 points while Chrys Washington added 14 points. Tanya Rhodes had 11 points.

Rhode Island finished the game shooting 55.4 percent and 57.1 percent from behind the arc. Keva Robinson led UT-Martin with a game-high 23 points while Andreika Jackson added 13 points. The Rams broke a 19-19 tie at 9:47 mark with a 15-9 run to take a 34-28 lead at haltime.

UT-Martin came within 45-41 in the second half, but the Rams pulled away down the stretch with a 22-9 run which gave Rhode Island a 67-50 lead with 8:20 remaining.
