Clemson Invitational Day 1 Results
SUNSET, S.C. – On the strength of three individual sub-par rounds, the Vanderbilt women’s golf squad finished the first day of play at the Clemson Invitational in fifth place.
The Commodores posted a team total of two-under 286, matching their best one-day total ever at the event. They trail Furman and Michigan State, co-leaders at 11-under par, Ohio State and Clemson in the 15-team field.
Head coach Greg Allen said the team’s two-under total could have been lower. The Commodores made the turn four-under par, but managed just six birdies against seven bogeys and a triple bogey on the closing nine holes.
Still, Allen liked how his squad performed over the Reserve at Lake Keowee course, a different par-72 layout that measures more than 6,200 yards.
“I thought today was a pretty good day, even though it looked like it could be a great day through about 11 holes,” Allen said. “But it’s a step in the right direction for sure.
“I’m really proud of all five girls and thought they played with great attitude and mindset the entire round. I’m looking forward to the second round,” Allen added.
On Saturday, the Commodores are paired with Clemson and Florida State and will tee off on No. 1 starting at 8:15 a.m. CT.
Freshman Virginia Green paced the Commodores, producing one of her most consistent rounds of the year. She made the last of four birdies on No. 18 to record a two-under 70.
Junior Courtney Zeng and freshman Morgan Baxendale gave strong support to Green, both shooting one-under 71. After opening with a bogey on No. 1, Zeng responded with three birdies to highlight her round. Baxendale started two-over through three holes, then made three birdies and played bogey-free golf over the last 15 holes.
Sophomore Abbey Carlson posted a two-over 74 but closed the round with momentum, making a birdie on No. 18.
Freshman Louise Yu shot 76 but could have produced a much lower score. She was two-under par through 11 holes but struggled to get to the clubhouse.
