The Commodore women’s golf team fired a first-round 293 on Friday at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., at the Long Cove Club and is in a tie for second in the team standings. Three Vanderbilt players, Kendall Martindale, Antonia Scherer, and Jennifer Hahn all shot a two-over par, 73, to pace the Commodore effort and all are in a tie for 14th on the individual leader board.
Vanderbilt trails first-place Duke by nine strokes and is tied with 2012 NCAA Champion Alabama. The Commodores and Crimson Tide hold a one stroke lead over fourth-place South Carolina in a field that features 14 of the top 30 teams in the nation.
Vanderbilt counted the three aforementioned 73’s, along with a 74 from freshman and reigning SEC Player of the Week Simin Feng on Friday. Junior Irina Gabasa carded a 77 in her first round at the par-71, 6,142-yard layout.
“The girls really competed well and showed a great effort today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “We got off to a good start today. We were paired with Duke and were right there with them at the turn. We didn’t play the third hole very well (12th hole of the day), but the girls are relaxed and we’re very grateful for the opportunity to be here at such a great event.”
Individually, Stephanie Meadow of Alabama leads all players after shooting a four-under par, 67, and holds a two stroke lead over Celine Boutier and Yu Liu of Duke, as well as Gaby Lopez of Arkansas.
