Dore Bowlers Second at Arkansas

10/29/2005

JONESBORO, AR – Vanderbilt found itself in a four-way tie for second place at Arkansas State’s Lady Indian Invitational Saturday.  Defending NCAA runner-up Central Missouri led with a perfect 5-0 day while the Commodores won three and lost twice along with Southern, Arkansas State and Bethune-Cookman.

Vanderbilt bowlers ended the day with three freshmen among the tournament’s top five averages.  Tara Kane, who set a school record with a 267 against Minnesota State in the day’s last game, averaged 222, which was good for second place.  Kaitlin Reynolds, who had a 244 in that last game, was fourth with a 209 average while Michelle Peloquin was fifth at 206.

“We still haven’t had a game where everybody’s been on but we manage to stay in contention despite that,” says Coach John Williamson.  “We continue to have some close losses by leaving too many pins standing that we should have knocked down.  However, this is the first time we’ve had a winning record after the first day of a tournament so we are making headway.”

Williamson noted that his team may be benefiting from a variety of conditioning workouts this fall.

“Our conditioning workouts appear to paying off, “he said, “because we bowled the last two games with the same intensity as first two. We expect to be in the best condition.”

Williamson noted that junior Christine Luce, who had a 189 against North Carolina A & T, made a critical contribution. Williamson was also impressed with Kane’s big day and noted that Peloquin’s 160 score misleading as she was substituted after the game was clinched.

The tournament concludes tomorrow.  Saturday’s team games will help establish a final team seeding for a series of Baker games that will determine the team champion.  Ten teams are competing.

Vanderbilt had played Minnesota State upon its arrival in Jonesboro Friday evening.  The Commodores lost by scores of 962-908 and 973-967.  In both games, inconsistency in the scoring from one through five proved the difference.
