LOCKPORT, Ill. — Vanderbilt bowling freshman Avery Domaguin topped the individual rankings to lead the Commodores to the No. 3 seed on Day 2 of the Storm Flyer Classic.
“It was a really solid day,” head coach John Williamson said. “We executed the game plan today about as well as we could have. I thought the team dynamics were very good. I really liked the way we competed in the Sam Houston match. It was a very well played match and a great preview of our conference tournament. Tomorrow will be fun.”
The Commodores, ranked No. 2 in the NTCA Coaches Poll, ended the day ranked third in the team standings, totaling 10,407 pins and averaging 208.1 pins per game on the weekend.
Domaguin, who won the individual title, compiled scores of 225, 256, 214, 255 and 215, averaging 233 pins per game. Saphyre Nofuente also cracked the top 5 behind scores of 237, 256, 159, 226 and 224. Two more Dores ended the day with top 20 finishes, including Alyssa Ballard, who finished 15th, and Katelyn Abigania, who turned in a 17th-place finish. In round 2, Natalie Kent came off the bench for the Dores and posted scored of 192, 222, 245 and 248 to average 226.75 pins per game.
Vanderbilt went unbeaten on Day 2, cruising to a 1,118-825 win over Marian in the opening round and collecting three wins over ranked opponents. The Dores defeated No. 19 McKendree, 1,079-960, and beat No. 14 Sam Houston State by a score of 1,151-1,122. Vandy ended its Saturday with a 1,122-906 win vs. 12th-ranked Wright State. The Dores’ lowest-scoring match of the day was a 990-872 win over Carroll.
The final day of the Storm Flyer Classic gets underway at 8:10 a.m. on Sunday when the Commodores face No. 11 Sacred Heart in a best-of-seven Baker match.
