The 12th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s golf team finished the day in a tie for 12th after the first round of the PING/ASU Invitational after firing a team score of 300 on Friday at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. Junior Kendall Martindale and freshman Antonia Scherer led the Commodore effort with a pair of 73’s.
The Commodores also counted a 76 from freshman Simin Feng and a pair of 78’s from sophomore Jennifer Hahn and junior Irina Gabasa. Sophomore Morgan Ransom played as an individual and carded a 77 Friday.
“It was tough out there for us today, but I am at peace with what happened today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I told them I would rather this happen today than at SEC’s or Regionals. Today is a great opportunity to learn and grow. They’ve shown they’re a resilient team and I truly believe they will bounce back.”
Washington leads the tournament by three strokes over host Arizona State after shooting a first-round 284. Katelyn Dambaugh of South Carolina and Ani Gulugian of UCLA lead all individuals after each posted a four-under par, 68.
The second round of the tournament continues tomorrow in Tempe, Ariz.
