First Round Results

The Vanderbilt women’s golf team finished their first round of the spring with a total of 309 at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla., and are in a tie for 11th with East Carolina after Sunday’s play at the Eagle Creek Golf Club.

The team was led by senior Jennifer Hahn, who carded a first-round 76 and is in a tie for 22nd. Freshman Courtney Zeng carded a 77 (T-30), with sophomores Cindy Ha and Alexandra Farnsworth closing out the Commodore scoring with a pair of 78’s (T-46). Junior Kate Sborov finished with a first-round 82, with junior Antonia Scherer shooting a five-over, 77, playing as an individual.

“Golf is hard,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “And under these conditions with the way we played, golf can get real hard, real fast. I probably say this every time I get cold on the golf course, but today might have been the coldest I’ve been on a golf course. Seriously, it wasn’t one of our better ball-striking days and we only made one team birdie. Conditions are forecast to be the same, so we need to embrace it and come out with our minds right ready to play golf.

Houston leads the tournament after shooting a seven-over par, 295. The Cougars have a four-shot lead on second-place Texas heading into the second round Monday. Individually, Michelle Butler of Missouri and Emily Penttila of Tulane have the lead after each shot a one-under par, 71.
