Day one of the Stanford Intercollegiate is in the books in Palo Alto, Calif., and the Commodores women’s golf team is in 13th place after shooting a first-round 296 at the Stanford University Golf Course Friday. Sophomore Jenny Hahn had Vanderbilt’s best score of the day, firing a one-over par, 72, which ties her for 22nd on the individual leader board.
“We got off to a horrible start, 10-over through our first six holes,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “It was definitely not what I was expecting. But, I’m proud of how they hung in there and fought to keep the round from continuing to go south. We’ve got a lot of ground to make up in the next couple of days and I’m anxious to see if they respond the same way they did at UNC.”
The Commodores counted a 74 from freshman Simin Feng, and a pair of 75’s from freshman Antonia Scherer and senior Rene Sobolewski, respectively. Junior Kendall Martindale shot a 79 on Friday.
USC leads the tournament after shooting an eight-under par, 276. The Trojans have a six-stroke lead over second-place Washington. Sophia Popov of USC leads all individuals after carding a five-under par, 66.
