The Commodore women’s golf team fired a first round total of 319 at the NCAA St. George Regional in St. George, Utah, and are in 17th place on the team leader board. Freshman Alexandra Farnsworth was the team’s leader on day one, shooting a eight-over par, 79.
Southern California is the leader after day one after shooting a first round total of nine-over, 293, four strokes better than second-place California.
“I’m probably more shocked with today’s results then anything,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I told the girls that the odds of just one of them breaking 80 in a round is probably one in a million. This is a golf course where anything can happen and big numbers can be made on a lot of holes. Unfortunately, we all made big numbers on a lot of holes. The really cool thing though is that I’m coaching a great group of girls that truly believe we can still get it done over the next two days. Their attitude is absolutely amazing. We’ve dug a big hole but I have faith in my team.”
Calilfornia’s Pauline Loulier leads all individuals with a three-under par, 68.
The top six teams advance from the St. George Regional to the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Fla., May 22-27. The Commodores are currently 14 shots back of the cutline.
