The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in a tie for eighth place at the 16th annual Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship after shooting a team score of seven-over par, 295, on Friday on the North course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. Freshman Abbey Carlson paced the Commodore effort with a one-under par, 71, in her first round, and is in a tie for eighth on the individual leaderboard.
The Commodores trail co-leaders Northwestern and Alabama, who are each at four-under par, 284, by 11 shots, and Carlson trails individual leaders Cheyenne Knight of Alabama and Elena Hualde of Auburn by three shots.
“I’m really fired up about this team,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen, who is in his 10th season. “Our mission each day is to get one day better and it’s fun to actually see it happening. This group is really buying into the process of focusing on hitting committed and courageous shots and not worrying about the outcome. I’m excited we have two more rounds left because that’s two more days we can get better. Now that’s fun!”
Vanderbilt counted Carlson’s 71, a pair of 74’s from junior Alexandra Farnsworth and sophomore Courtney Zeng, and a 76 from freshman Alison Armstrong.
The second round of the tournament begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free to the event.
