Day One: Commodores in First at Mason Rudolph

9/23/2005

Day Two Tee Times Available

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Vanderbilt grabbed the early lead in the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship Friday shooting a team record 279 in opening-round play and will carry a six-shot lead over Duke and Georgia into action Saturday. The three-day event is taking place on the 6,217-yard Ironhorse Course at Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Sophomore Liebelei Lawrence and freshman Jacqui Conconlino both shot a 4-under par 68 to tie for first place in the individual standings. Fellow Commodores junior Kristen Svicarovich finished three shots behind after carding a 71 and tied for 12th place. Junior Chris Brady tied for 16th after shooting par on 16 of the 18 holes and finishing even at 72. Freshman Amber Lundskog shot a 3-over par 75 and is tied for 40th position.

The Commodores’ previous record for a single round was 280 carded at the Stanford-Pepsi Women’s Intercollegiate in October 2001.

The foursome of Amanda Blumenherst and Anna Grzebien of Duke, Georgia’s Alina Lee and Auburn’s Maria Martinez are tied for third place, one shot behind Vanderbilt’s Lawrence and Concolino, at 3-under par.

Lawrence carded seven birdies on the day and climbed to 5-under par after the 12th hole. After posting a double-bogey on the 13th and a bogey on the 14th, she rebounded to record her last two birdies on the 16th and 17th holes.

“I’ve known for a while what I could do on this course,” Lawrence said. “It’s about time it finally happened. We’re all hoping to build on this for the rest of the weekend.”

Concolino eagled the 10th hole and posted three birdies on the day. Her third birdie pushed her to 5- under par before a bogey on the final hole ended her round at 68.

“I probably should have had a few more bogeys but I made some great up and downs today,” Concolino said. “It helps your game when everyone is playing well because you’re able to build momentum from one another.”

“I’m so proud of everyone,” Head Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “When you’re able to throw out a 75 you know you’ve had a good day. Our team really plays with great composure and competitiveness. Everyone really wants to come out and show we can play with the best teams in the nation.”

Playing unattached, Vanderbilt’s Julie Bartholomew shot a 77 (+5) to tie for 33rd place while teammate Helen Richards carded a 78 (+6) to tie for 56th position.

Second-round action begins at 8 a.m. Saturday. Vanderbilt tees off from the first hole beginning at 9:30 a.m.
