NEW CASTLE, Del. — Vanderbilt bowling climbed its way up the Northeast Classic leaderboard and into third place after going 5-0 on Friday.
“On a day where we could’ve been easily distracted, we were remarkably consistent,” head coach John Williamson said. “We need to come out tomorrow with the same group energy and shot execution so we can play for a championship on Sunday.”
The Commodores wasted no time getting back into the swing of things after the winter break, defeating Morgan State, 968-909, in round 1 with a lineup of Victoria Varano, Sydney Bohn, Natalie Kent, Dannielle Henderson and Katelyn Abigania. Despite the win, Vandy found itself ranked 11th in the team standings, which are determined by total pinfall.
Over the course of the next four matches, Vanderbilt worked its way up the leaderboard, collecting wins over UAB, No. 23 Kutztown, Howard and No. 24 Delaware State. Round 1 was the Dores’ only match of the day scoring less than 1,000 pins.
Vanderbilt ended Friday’s action with its highest-scoring match of the day, a 1,065-953 win over Delaware State.
The Commodores’ Day 1 pin total is 5,094, which is 207 pins behind top-seeded Wichita State. Jacksonville State holds the No. 2 position in the team standings with 5,291 pins.
Action continues Saturday at the Northeast Classic with the first of five traditional games beginning at 8:25 a.m. CT.
