Vanderbilt senior guard Dee Davis has been named the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team’s Player of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday.
Davis helped start Vanderbilt’s “Building ‘Dores” program, which encourages area youth to become more physically fit through an incentive-based activity schedule. She made several appearances at local schools and was featured in the DVD that promoted the program.
The Cincinnati, Ohio native also organized team appearances at Nashville’s annual Race for the Cure, We Care For Kids Day and the SAAC Christmas Party. Additionally, she volunteered at the Buddy Walk, October Fest, Kids’ Zone and Vanderbilt’s Field Day.
On the court, Davis has led the Commodores to a 13-1 start. She ranks first in the SEC in assists per game, averaging 6.8 helpers per contest. Davis stands only 37 assists behind former VU great Ashley McElhiney for first all-time on Vanderbilt’s career assists list. Davis is also just 74 points away from being the 27th Commodore to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Davis leads the Commodores — ranked No. 11 by the Associated Press and No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll — into their SEC opener on Thursday, Jan. 4, as No. 20/23 Arkansas Lady Razorbacks visit Memorial Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. CT tip off.
